Development Process of Aircraft Systems

Aircraft’s functions are more and more integrated; this results in highly integrated and complex systems. The complexity of the design increases the complexity of development and development’s processes. Furthermore, the identification of systematic design errors became more and more difficult, and the assessment of system safety also became more and more complex. So, what to do! especially when we think about unmanned commercial aircraft, and air taxis in crowded cities.
A development process that integrates the safety evaluation into the aircraft’s and system’s design process will help identifying and reducing systematic design errors. ARP4754A introduces guidelines for such processes; it integrates a safety process into the whole aircraft’s development process.
Regarding the design, the ARP4754A requires detailed data, i.e. system-level planning, traceability of requirements, validation of requirements, verification of implementation, and configuration management. From safety point of view, the ARP4754A requires a detailed safety process, i.e. Functional Hazard Assessment, Preliminary Aircraft Safety Assessment / Preliminary System Safety Assessment, Aircraft Safety Assessment / System Safety Assessment and Common Cause Analysis.
